Distance Management
Prerequisites: Carbine Combatives (or instructor approval)
Gun fights are rarely static – people are moving as the situation changes dynamically and rapidly. In this class we focus on the problem of height over bore and ballistic trajectory as it applies to engaging targets at various distances.
Course Outline
- Universal Firearm Safety Rules
- Flow Drills (ready/carry positions)
- Presentation while moving offline
- Discussion over height over bore and rise/fall of bullet
- Engaging a very close target (within 10’) – “indexed based aiming”
- Engaging a near target (~30’) – threat-focused shooting
- Engaging a target at ~50’ – sighted fire
- Transitioning rapidly from near to far, far to near
Mobile Shooting Platform
Prerequisites: Carbine Combatives (or instructor approval)
As the effable James Yeager has said, “Motionless Operators Ventilate Easily, MOVE!” A moving target is a much harder target. In this class we learn the principles of remaining mobile while engaging targets and moving from cover to cover.
Course Outline
- Universal Firearm Safety Rules
- Flow Drills (ready/carry positions)
- Presentation while moving offline
- Task vs. Priority discussion for movement in different situations
- Combat Glide
- Move, Plant, Shoot, Move
- Reloading on the Move
Threat Triage
Prerequisites: Carbine Combatives (or instructor approval)
Gun fights in the real world don’t often happen against one stationary, obvious target directly in front of you. In this class we discuss target prioritization, movement, and orientation on both known threats and unknowns in a changing environment. Students will learn how to engage and transition between multiple targets, beginning with the most immediate danger.
Course Outline
- Universal Firearm Safety Rules
- Flow Drills (ready/carry positions)
- Presentation while moving offline
- Pivoting to orientate on a threat to the left, right, or behind
- Engaging multiple targets
- Rapidly recognizing immediate versus secondary threats.
Failure to Stop
Prerequisite: Carbine Combatives (or instructor approval)
Five out of seven people that get shot live – which means they may continue to fight even after getting hit. Seldom does a single shot stop the threat. In this class, we learn to recognize when a tactic has failed and rapidly switch to a backup plan. Learn why “two in the chest, one in the head” is a poor strategy and train to prevail!
Course Outline
- Universal Firearm Safety Rules
- Flow Drills (ready/carry positions)
- Presentation while moving offline
- Rapid assessment
- Shot Placement and ideal target zones
- Angles of Fire
Precision Rifle
Prerequisite: Carbine Combatives (or instructor approval)
Aim Small, Miss Small! Being able to quickly get rounds on even a small target, or a target at a distance, is a vital skill with any weapon system. In this class we practice consistent presentation to decrease the time spent aiming as well as using improvised supported platforms to increase the stability of the weapon.
Course Outline
- Universal Firearm Safety Rules
- Flow Drills (ready/carry positions)
- Presentation Focus
- Trigger Manipulation
- Skeleton v Muscle Support Discussion
- Improvised Supported Platform (bags/arms on table/flat surface)
- Barrier Supported Positions (using sides of walls/trees)
Malfunctions & Reloads
Prerequisite: Carbine Combatives (or instructor approval)
Modern firearms in good condition with quality ammunition rarely have stoppages (“jams”) and often have higher capacities than the “typical” gunfight requires. Training for your worst case scenario is a better plan than training for the perfect situation. In this class we learn to recognize problems without a visual indicator and reinforce immediate action solutions to fixing malfunctions and getting an empty gun back in the fight.
Course Outline
- Universal Firearm Safety Rules
- Flow Drills (ready/carry positions)
- Presentation while moving
- Immediate Action versus Stop, Look
- Clearing Malfunctions/Stoppages (Type 1, Type 2, Type 3)
- Proactive Reload (“tactical” reload)
- Emergency Reload (“slidelock” reload)
One-Handed Shooting
Prerequisite: Carbine Combatives (or instructor approval)
Rifles are made to be shot with two mostly functional hands. Life can throw us curveballs, however, and being able to use a rifle effectively with one hand can be a valuable asset. In this class we learn to shoot and reload a rifle with injuries or hands having to perform other tasks.
Course Outline
- Universal Firearm Safety Rules
- One-Handed Flow Drills (ready/carry positions)
- One-Handed Presentation
- Compressed One-Handed (chicken wing)
- Shouldered One-Handed
- One-Handed Reloads
Intro to Low Light
Prerequisite: Carbine Combatives (or instructor approval)
Humans are visually oriented creatures and predators like to use the cover of darkness. In this class we learn the advantages and disadvantages of fighting in low light to total darkness. Students will be introduced to weapons mounted lights, handheld lights, and even improvised light sources.
Course Outline
- Universal Firearm Safety Rules
- Flow Drills (ready/carry positions)
- Presentation while moving
- Shooting from Lit Position into Low-Light
- Shooting from Low-Light into Illuminated Position
- Shooting in Total Darkness
- Usage of Weapons Mounted and/or Handheld Lights
- Usage of Improvised Lights (cell phones)
Cover & Concealment
Prerequisite: Carbine Combatives (or instructor approval)
Having something in between you and the person trying to kill you is always advisable – especially if it’s able to stop a bullet! In this class we discuss the differences between cover and concealment. We learn to become a hard target by minimizing angles of exposure while maximizing angles of fire.
Course Outline
- Universal Firearm Safety Rules
- Flow Drills (ready/carry positions)
- Presentation while moving
- Angles of Exposure/Fire (“Slicing the Pie”)
- Using cover unpredictably (elevation and angle changes)
- Usage of Low Cover
Lowered Positions
Prerequisite: Carbine Combatives (or instructor approval)
Smaller targets are harder to hit, and many lowered positions increase our stability. In this class we learn to rapidly assume a kneeling or sitting position to maximize our ability to engage threats while increasing the difficulty for them to engage us.
Course Outline
- Universal Firearm Safety Rules
- Flow Drills (ready/carry positions)
- High, Low, and Mobile Kneeling positions
- Cross and Open Sitting Positions
- Presentation from Sitting/Kneeling Positions
Ground Works
Prerequisite: Carbine Combatives (or instructor approval)
Smaller targets are harder to hit, and many ground positions increase our stability. Some situations put us on the ground when we don’t want to be! In this class we learn to shoot from our bellies, backs, and sides while on the ground with a rifle.
Course Outline
- Universal Firearm Safety Rules
- Flow Drills (ready/carry positions)
- Prone Shooting (on the belly)
- Supine Shooting (on the back)
- Fetal/Urban Shooting (on the side)
- Transition from position to position
